About the New Cancer Center
Construction of the new Cancer Center at Kishwaukee Community Hospital is scheduled to be completed by the end of October and open for patient care in early November. Open houses for patients, donors, employees and the community are being planned. The new facility brings medical oncology, hematology and radiation oncology under the same roof, giving cancer patients and their families a full-service facility.
The new building includes a chemotherapy area with a view of a healing garden and offers the flexibility of private treatment, semi-private treatment and space to receive group treatment. Space also will be dedicated to complementary therapies such as massage and acupuncture to minimize side effects of treatment. Diagnostic capabilities in the center include laboratory services and PET/CT scans. An Image Center will make breast prosthesis fittings, special bras., active wear, wig fittings, skin products and make-up consultations to restore self-esteem conveniently available to patients in a private setting. A patient resource office will be staffed once a week by the American Cancer Society and available at other times for patients and caregivers to access educational materials and do Internet research. There also will be private space for individual or group education and training, support programs, and therapy programs.
As a result of our recent clinical affiliation with Loyola University Health System arrangements are being finalized for Loyola specialists to come to the Kish Hospital or the cancer center for weekly patient clinics. Loyola specialists also will be available to consult with physicians. This affiliation brings additional oncology services to the community, reducing the need for patients to travel out of town. Experimental treatments and research trials will be done by our local physicians, as well, with oversight and support from Loyola’s world-class cancer specialists.
