Alternative Therapies

Massage TherapyYour well-being and comfort is of utmost importance to us. And we believe that your care should include more than medications and procedures. At The Cancer Center at Kishwaukee Community Hospital, we offer you relaxation with massage therapy and physical therapy, decreased pain through our Pain Management Clinic, and a plan for better health and nutrition with our dietician. We understand that your wellbeing is beyond your physical condition, so we offer support and special care by our counselors to help you cope with your cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Clinical Trials

Are you interested in learning more about clinical trials? The Loyola Center for Cancer Care & Research at Kishwaukee Community Hospital is located inside The Cancer Center, where you have local access to experimental treatments and clinical research trials done by local physicians with support from Loyola’s world-class cancer specialists.

The physicians at The Cancer Center encourage patients to participate in clinical trials and will discuss options and studies available. Our clinical research nurse coordinates care for cancer patients enrolled in a clinical trial. If allowed by the protocol of the clinical trial, The Cancer Center will administer some or all of the medications, working closely with Loyola. This affiliation brings additional oncology services to the community, reducing the need for you to travel out of town.

Lymphedema Physical Therapy

Physical therapists at Unlimited Performance Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine are trained in treating lymphedema, a common side effect of cancer treatments. Lymphedema is an accumulation of fluid that causes swelling in an extremity and may also include the trunk region. The build-up occurs because the path to drain the fluid is altered by surgery, radiation or chemotherapy in a lymph node region. Recent studies are showing that this condition can be effectively treated.

Lymphedema must be treated promptly or it can lead to increased swelling and hardening of tissue. This may result in decreased function and mobility in the affected limb. It can also lead to chronic infections.

Patients must have a prescription from their doctor to begin physical therapy treatments. Therapists at Unlimited Performance will then work closely with the physician to develop a therapy plan to effectively manage lymphedema conditions.

For more information or to schedule an appointment call Unlimited Performance Rehabilitation & Sports Medicine at 815.748.8900.

Massage Therapy

Recent studies have proven massage is safe and beneficial during all phases of cancer treatment. Unlimited Performance’s massage therapists are dedicated to caring for their clients. We develop individualized sessions to optimize the effects of massage while maintaining the safety and integrity of each person. Massage assists with reduction of pain, enhances the relaxation response, provides a caring and nurturing environment, promotes a feeling of control, promotes self-esteem, and helps adjust to body changes

If you are receiving radiation therapy, please check with your radiation oncologist prior to scheduling a massage.

Pain Management Clinic

Integrative medicine is a relatively new term that implies a holistic approach to healthcare. It rests upon, and strongly embraces, the osteopathic and naturopathic concept that we human beings possess a self-regulating, self-healing system that gives us a natural tendency towards health and healing. The human body has within itself certain limits - the capacity for repair, correction and adaptation. As Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, the founder of osteopathy, suggests, "Within our body there is a capacity for health. If this capacity is recognized and normalized, disease can be both prevented and treated."

For more information or to schedule an appointment call the Pain Management Clinic at Kishwaukee Community Hospital at 815.748.2987.

Physical Therapy

Rehabilitation focuses on restoring function, and/or preventing disability following disease or injury. It incorporates exercise and modalities to improve range of motion, strength, posture and mobility, enabling the patient to perform the activities of daily living.
